A firm mattress can be very uncomfortable and may lead to various problems such as back and neck pain. In most cases when you have ordered the mattress online, you may find that the mattress is very firm. When this happens, returning the mattress may not be the best idea. A mattress might be firm but durable. What you need to do is to think of how you can make it soft. Again, mattresses tend to be firm when they are new. However, most of them become soft after sometime. In this article, you will learn how you can effectively make a firm mattress soft.

Check the foundation

You will find that mattresses have different forms of foundations. For example, if you have been using an innerspring mattress and you want to shift to a foam mattress, you will have to remove the box spring. A box spring is simply a box that has springs inside which works as motion isolators. However, if you don’t have a memory foam mattress, you can use a box spring to make the mattress softer. Note that box springs are specially built for innerspring mattresses.

Again, a mattress may have a slatted or firm platform. Platforms make the mattress to be a bit firm. However, if you are using a foam mattress, you can easily adjust the base to make it soft.

Stepping on the bed

Using a firm mattress frequently will soften it after sometime. Another effecting way is stepping or walking on it every day. This will makes it soft faster instead of waiting for it to become soft after using it one some time.

Use a topper

Another great way is buying a mattress topper or a pillow top mattress. These ones are placed on top of the mattress to boost comfort. The good thing is that they are very soft and inexpensive. The best mattress topers are made of latex, cotton, wool, memory foam, down alternative or polyfoam.

Warm it

This method is more effective if you are using a foam mattress because they respond quickly to external temperature. All you need to do is to ensure that the room is warm using a thermostat.

Rotate or Flip It

If you are using a pillow top bed, this method might not work. You will only need to rotate the mattress at 180 degrees. This means that the area where you lay your head will now support your legs. You can also flip it by turning it upside down.

Conclusion

If you have been struggling to sleep comfortably on a firm mattress, you can use any of the above method to make it soft. The good this is that all the methods are very easy and you may not require special tools to do this. These methods will also save you the cost of buying a softer mattress. In case you have a soft mattress and you want to make it firm, you can also use do the opposite of what we have covered. For example, making the room cool and adjusting the foundation.
